White Gravy Recipe

  • Author: ARLINDA
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This easy white gravy recipe is a Southern classic that pairs perfectly with biscuits, fried chicken, or mashed potatoes. Made with simple pantry staples like butter, flour, and milk, it’s creamy, flavorful, and ready in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup butter (or bacon drippings)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra creaminess)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: cooked sausage or bacon bits for added flavor

Instructions

  • Melt the Butter:
In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter (or bacon drippings) over medium heat.
  • Make the Roux:
Whisk in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 2-3 minutes until the mixture turns golden and has a slightly nutty aroma. Be careful not to let it burn.
  • Add the Milk:
Slowly pour in the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Continue whisking as the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Season the Gravy:
Once thickened to your liking, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. If you’re adding sausage or bacon bits, stir them in at this point.
  • Serve:
Pour the gravy over biscuits, fried chicken, or mashed potatoes, and enjoy!

Notes

This gravy can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat over low heat and add a splash of milk to regain the smooth texture if it thickens.
